There are four Realms. Our own, Earth, the mundane Realm. Heaven, where the alleged "Holy Ones" dwell. Hell, populated by demons and devils and all those cunning and wicked. And the Fourth Realm, the Realm of Chaos, where horrors resided, locked away for the protection of all.
For millenia, the occupants of Heaven and Hell were locked in deadly combat, warring on and on in a war of mutual destruction. And then three hundred years ago, the unthinkable had occurred, and the conflict in Heaven and Hell caused the wards on the Realm of Chaos to fracture, letting the true demons out into the human world. This triggered the event known to the humans as the Apocalypse. And Earth fell, diseased, torn apart by howling monsters, slowly destroyed in waves of fire and ice. For nearly a hundred years, the streets of abandoned cities ran with the blood of hapless humans. Finally, the Rulers of Heaven and Hell declared a truce, warily casting aside their ancient feud to lock away the monsters of Chaos, and restore something vaguely resembling order to the worlds.
But Earth was lost, nothing more now than a barren wasteland, corrupted by the influence of the denizens of Chaos. The ground would grow no crops, and all water was polluted. The animals lay rotting in the harsh sun. The air was thick, and hard to breathe. The few remaining citizens of Earth were doomed for extinction. But once again Heaven and Hell intervened.
They melded what remained of Earth with their two Realms, blending the three planes of existence into something new, something totally unrecognizable. For the sake of the last remaining humans, the angels and demons cast aside their enmity. Or so they said...
The humans have recreated themselves, grown in numbers, and learned to live alongside the angels and the demons. Over the years though, they abandoned their technology, mistakenly seeing it as what caused the destruction of their world. The dark hulks that were once the airships of old now lie rusting. The science of medicine is all but forgotten. The humans are, once again, vulnerable. Heaven and Hell are on the verge of declaring war on one another.
And Chaos is stirring...
Seven men and women, who might perhaps be referred to as heroes (if those who refer are deaf, dumb, and particularly stupid), have volunteered -- entirely against their will -- to try and find the Seven Keys to the Realm of Chaos, before anyone else does.
